Quick Story Line
A football player, Jackson Pace, senses that someone else is in his house, and while calling 911 sees that photographs from his past have been glued to the walls–photos were taken on the night Jackson beat up another student at his school, Caleb, as part of a haze. Jackson is stabbed to death by someone wearing a mask resembling Jacksons own face, and the man then exposes the film of Caleb’s assault to the entire school. People believe that Caleb was beaten up because he was gay and that he hired a killer because he was at the football game at the time of the tragedy. We are introduced to a group of friends, Makani, Alex, Zach, Darby and Rodrigo. They let Caleb sit with them at lunch after he is shunned by the rest of the school. The school’s student council president, Katie, reads aloud one of her essays, and says that there will be a memorial at a church. The friends notice a student, Ollie, looking at them, which scares them. Unbeknownst to them, Ollie is Makani’s ex. Zach has his car graffitied as most people hate him because of his rich land developer father. At the church, while Katie is setting up, someone begins to play a racist and homophobic podcast that she recorded. She is confronted by the killer, who is wearing a mask of her face. The townspeople arrive and find Katie’s corpse hanging from the rafter. Makani, who lives with her sleepwalking grandmother, has flashbacks of a burning fire and screaming. She googles her name and finds nothing, but when she googles “Makani Sun-Woo”, she finds articles about her being arrested. The next day, the entire school is being interviewed at the police station by the sheriff, who is Ollie’s older brother. Zach’s father releases Zach, much to his anger over being spoiled. Sheriff Larsson interviews the school and after asking Ollie if he knew who took his taser, lets Makani go.
